Experimental Investigation of Apollo 16 “Rusty Rock” Alteration by a Lunar Fumarolic Gas

چکیده
The Apollo 16 sample 66095, named “Rusty Rock”, is enriched in volatile and moderately elements. impact melt breccia characterized by abundant Fe-rich sulfide chloride alteration phases, including FeS, ZnS, FeCl2. These phases have previously been interpreted to be the result of fumarolic breccia. Here we present results two different experimental approaches, which aim constrain temperature conditions process under Rock” formed. first set-up assumes that metals Zn, Cu, Fe were introduced into rock a C-O-S-Cl gas phase, sulfides chlorides deposited from this phase. This “gas deposition” experiment suggests assemblage formed over range 538–638 ± 5°C. second simulates scenario, where metal particles lunar react with Zn-C-O-S-Cl phase at six temperatures between 396 5°C 1,005 latter “metal reaction” resulted formation coatings on chips. FeCl2 (Zn,Fe)S abundantly coating chip reacted 580 10°C. Both experiments lead are agreement, providing 50°C for Moon, as observed Rock”.

APOLLO: Multiplexed Lunar Laser Ranging
The Apache Point Observatory Lunar Laser-ranging Operation (APOLLO) is a nextgeneration lunar laser ranging (LLR) campaign aimed at order-of-magnitude improvements in tests of gravitational physics via millimeter range precision. We will employ the 3.5 m telescope at the Apache Point Observatory (APO), located in southern New Mexico at an altitude of 2800 m. As a result of the large aperture si...
متن کاملA Laboratory Investigation into Wettability Alteration of Carbonate Rock by Surfactants: The Effect of Salinity, pH, and Surfactant Concentration
Wettability alteration is an important method for increasing oil recovery from oil-wet carbonate reservoirs. Chemical agents like surfactants are known as wettability modifiers in carbonate systems. Oil can be recovered from initially oil-wet carbonate reservoirs by wettability alteration from oil-wet to water-wet condition with adding dilute surfactant and electrolyte solutions. This paper inv...
متن کاملOrganics in Apollo Lunar Samples
Introduction: One of many unknowns prior to the Apollo landings concerned the possibility of life, its remains, or its organic precursors on the surface of the Moon. While the existence of lunar organisms was considered highly unlikely, a program of biological quarantine and testing for the astronauts, the Apollo Command Modules, and the lunar rock and soil samples , was instituted in the Lunar...
متن کاملLunar Ranging, Gravitomagnetism, and APOLLO
The technique of lunar laser ranging (LLR) has for many decades contributed to cutting-edge tests of the fundamental nature of gravity. These include the best tests to date of the strong equivalence principle, the time-rate-of-change of the gravitational constant, gravitomagnetism, the inverse square law, and preferred frame effects. The phenomenologies of each are briefly discussed, followed b...
متن کاملA new lunar high-Ti basalt type defined from clasts in Apollo 16 breccia 60639
This paper reports the detailed examination of three basalt clasts from Apollo 16 breccia 60639 that represent a new variant of high-Ti basalt returned from the Moon by the Apollo 16 mission. Mineral chemistry and whole-rock analyses were conducted on aliquots from three clasts (breccia matrix, basalt, and basalt + breccia matrix). The basalt clasts, which are not overtly porphyritic, contain c...
